Introduction
Traditional baskets are a symbol of a way of life that is slowly diminishing...
One of the most evident handicraft skills in any kampung (village) is basketry. Nevertheless, these everyday objects are often overlooked, perhaps because of their mundane and utilitarian nature. On close inspection, it is clear to see that these beautiful objects have invariably been made with great care and skill. On top of this, we are rewarded with insight into the lives of the older generation.
Much can be learned from life in the kampung. Just like their intricate handiwork, the lives of the people are closely interwoven. The bonds that link them also serve to unite them with their environment. While it may appear that I am romanticising the past, I am aware of the hardship that goes with the traditional kampung life.
It is more than a matter of baskets. It is a question of who we are and how best to strengthen our cultural identity. Hence, the conservation of cultural knowledge is vital. There are no manuals or textbooks on this important traditional skill the value of which has been underestimated. What is left behind is in the object itself, their material language, the legacy of the kampung people.
"OUR CRAFT IS OUR IDENTITY"
